Back to School

Back to School. Already?!

It’s that time again. Summer seems like it just started and you’re already back-to-school shopping and the kids have begun their fall sports. Another school year is upon us and with that comes hectic schedules and demanding extracurriculars.

Now that the school year is starting there might be some concerns you have regarding your children concentrating and learning better in school. ADD, ADHD and frequent headaches are common factors that could interfere with your child’s learning.

Of course, there are ways to “fix” these problems with some trips to the medical doctor and medications but why not try a safer, more natural, approach? Let me go more in depth as to how chiropractic care can help with ADD, ADHD, headaches and even your child’s athletic performance in their school sports.

“He can’t focus in class.”

“She won’t ever sit still, she’s so hyper.”

“He’s disruptive.”

Any of these sound adhdfamiliar? Maybe your child’s teacher has mentioned something like this to  you or a friend or family member.

Whether you have a child that has ADHD or ADD or think your child might, chiropractic care is a safer, more natural alternative to simply just putting them on medication.

The problem: When parents recognize that there’s an issue they go to a medical doctor who’s first choice is to prescribe Ritalin.

Ritalin® is a schedule II controlled substance related to, and producing similar effects as, amphetamines and cocaine. The side effects, including personality changes and permanent changes to the brain, cause many parents to look for alternatives.

The solution: Chiropractic is an approach you can take without medicating your child. Why wouldn’t you want your child medication free and feeling better the natural way?

How it Helps:

1. Pure and Natural- Instead of treating the various symptoms of hyperactivity, we look for disturbances to the child’s nervous system. We often find problems caused by spinal distortions in the upper neck.

2. Brain Stimulation-It can help brain stimulation by opening up pathways so that as much stimulation can get to the brain from sight, smell, touch and taste. In many cases it can correct long-standing brain imbalances responsible for many of the deficits that lead to ADD.

With the stress of juggling hectic schedules filled with school and extracurriculars, headaches can be common. Chances are, there’s an underlying cause as to why your child is getting headaches. This is where chiropractic can help.

headachesOur objective is to actually find the underlying cause of the headaches, versus having your child simply take pain relievers.

Some common causes:

  • Spinal bones in the neck that aren’t supporting the head properly. You might not notice your reduced ability to turn your head. But these subluxations affect nerves, muscles and even the blood supply to your head.
  • Some are surprised to learn that their headaches are being caused by problems in their lower back! The upper spine compensates, shifting the head off center, causing headaches.

How Athletes Benefit from Chiropractic Care

Your team is counting on you. You’re their star player and you’re up against your rival this week. But wait, you’re stuck on the bench, because of an injury you got in practice?

Want to avoid being in this situation?

There is no definite way to avoid injury altogether, but there are ways to help prevent it and ways to heal faster if you do sustain an injury.

Athletes of all types often suffer from injuries that respond to chiropractic.

Chiropractic helps to maintain muscular function and coordination because it helps the nervous system (which controls muscular function and coordination) work like its supposed to. Chiropractic helps by putting your nervous system back in peak operating shape, allowing nerves to send the correct signals to the correct parts of the body, maximizing the ability to function during the competition, and the ability to heal when the dust settles.

So you now know that chiropractic care is important for sports performance, but nutrition is equally as important, and is vital in order to promote health to the body. Karen Romano, D.C., a 1995 dual nutrition and chiropractic graduate from Life University, says of chiropractic and nutrition in an interview,  “Poor nutrition can cause a lot of subluxations (bone out of place causing nerve interference), and a lot of times, people’s subluxations and muscle pains don’t get better until their diet is better. They are both necessary for health.”

Every sport has injuries and there is no sure way to completely avoid them. Maybe your child has gotten a concussion from football or suffers from shin splints in basketball or soccer. If you were to go to a medical doctor they would most likely prescribe pain medication or if the injury was bad enough, suggest surgery. Chiropractic care takes a different approach.

How Chiropractic Helps:

There are two types of injuries, acute and chronic, and chiropractic care can help treat both. Acute injuries are injuries that just happened, such as a sprained ankle or a pulled muscle. Chronic injuries are ones that developed over time, such as tennis elbow.

Chiropractic helps by helping to avoid minor injuries which, in turn, could lead to major injuries. Chiropractic care keeps your body in balance and running at peak efficiency, so that you get injured less and heal faster if you are injured.

Regular adjustments keep your body in balance, help reaction time, and helps to make sure muscles are in their natural, relaxed state so they don’t get too tight and get pulled or get too loose and allow a joint injury.
